JillE Books is a brand new publishing imprint which has been launched by NZ owned and operated educational publishing house, Global Ed. One of the new release titles by JillE Books is Wobbling Whiskers, which includes an audio CD with the story on it. It’s a fun little tale about two mice and the big ol’ scary Mr Cat, who stands between them and their next meal.
I’m liking
This book is heaps of fun to read. I can read it over and over; it provides a lot of room for fun intonation and voices. There’s a nice amount of dialogue and onomatopoeia, and I enjoy the fact that the story isn’t rhyming in this instance. The images are bright and fun in a cartoon-esque way.
The CD has been a huge hit with my 3.5 year old. It chimes when the pages are to be turned, so he proudly reads along on the right pages and endeavours to recite the words. Hours of fun.
Things that made me go hmmmm
I just feel like the story could resolve itself in a slightly more engaging way. The ending does provide a nice talking point but it feels slightly flat.
The conclusion
I really like this book. I am happy when my son brings it to me to read, because it’s so easy to animate (I’m actually surprised the person reading the CD presents the story in a much more straightforward way than I do when I’m reading it aloud!)
Written by Jill Eggleton and illustrated by Ricky Rumsey, Wobbling Whiskers retails for $24.99.
