Waiting for Later is the most gorgeous, whimsical story about a little girl who wants to play and do things with the other members of her family but they’re all busy. She keeps being told that she needs to… wait for later.

I’m liking

The story is deceptively simple and has a lovely circular structure. At the beginning, she knows she’s big but feels small. No one will play with her and she feels lost. Then she climbs a tree and experiences the world from a different perspecive- knowing that she is small but feeling big. It’s a gentle story about feeling lost and finding your place in the world.

The illustrations in this book are just delicious and again, deceptive. As with the very best of children’s picture books, they stand up to multiple visits and after 20-odd reads, we still ‘discover’ things.

Things that made me go hmmmm

None. I think this book is wonderful.

The conclusion

A really worthy finalist in the NZ Post Children’s Book Awards and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this book come out as the winner.

Author

Rochelle is mum to three gorgeous daughters. She wishes she had more time to garden and read the newspaper in peace!
