It was a privilege to review the TomTom Go and see the advances TomTom has made on GPSs we have previously used.
I’m liking
The TomTom Go was a life saver after an early morning flight with three preschoolers. It was great to get into our rental car, power up the TomTom, and be told where to go, what exits to take and how long it would take to reach our destination.
What most stands out is how intuitive the TomTom Go is to use. The last thing you need on holiday is to be fiddling around with the GPS, trying desperately to get it to work as you navigate your way through Brisbane traffic. The TomTom Go felt familiar, with similar functionality to an ipad or smartphone. I particularly like the ability to drag the map around and simply tap a point on the map for quick navigation. Having been to Queensland before, I would sometimes know which direction I wanted to go, but not necessarily the street address. At one point we drove past a park that looked great fun for the kids and having the tap and go function enabled us to easily save the park as a favourite location, and get us back there at a later time. The pinch-to-zoom function was also a real help when I needed to quickly get the big picture.
I also liked the My Places function which made it really easy to save and access locations of interest and the quick search gives suggestions as the key words are typed in. This was great when I was not entirely sure of the place name.
The conclusion
Unlike some GPSs we have used in the past the TomTom Go was super reliable with up to date maps. Talking with friends about their holidays in Australia led to them complaining about their GPS and numerous e-goose chases, something I was pleased we managed to avoid.
This was easily the best GPS we have used and contributed to a wonderful relaxing holiday for the whole family.
