Lois Rock is a prolific Christian children’s writer. Recently released is her Tiny Tots Bible, a hard cover Bible with twenty popular scriptures retold in easy-to-read format with illustrations by Kay Widdowson.
I’m liking
Bright, cute pictures adorn the pages of the Tiny Tots Bible, with many stories being instantly recognisable through the illustrations. The text is written clearly and is full of dialogue which makes for great read-a-loud capability or is ideal for those starting out on their reading journey. A good half of the book focuses on New Testament accounts which is not always the case with children’s bibles.
Things that made me go hmmmm
Some of the pictures do err on the side of fantastical renditions rather than straight illustrations of what is presented in scripture (i.e. several tiers on Noah’s ark and sea snails/jellyfish adorning a whale in the story of Jonah). I know people who prefer to see more ‘real’ illustrations and if you fall into this camp, this is probably not the children’s Bible for you (and you probably struggle to find one!)
The conclusion
Published by Lion Children’s Books, this edition of the Bible suits reading aloud to children 2.5+, or would be excellent as a Bible for early readers from 5+. It retails for around $20, and at 128 pages, represents good value for money.
