This book is one of a series by the author about Forensic Psychiatrist Jo Beckett. The story involves Autumn Reiniger’s reality birthday party in which a “crime situation” is supposed to be enacted by her and her mates. But things go horribly wrong. Jo and her boyfriend accidentally stumble across something that looks suspicious and are drawn into a dangerous game that’s all too real.
I’m liking
I liked the story and the fact that the characters found out more about themselves through the extreme situations they found themselves in.
Things that made me go hmmmm
While it was good to see the characters developing internal fortitude at times their survival felt unbelievable and a lot of suspension of belief was required. The story was at times overwritten, with some painful prose, which distracted from the story.
The conclusion
I thought that the idea of a forensic psychiatrist was an interesting premise however, being a series The Nightmare Thief did not focus on on the psychiatry instead it was basically a thriller. As a consequence of being a series the characters development has, I assume, happened over the series and being a first time reader I was at times unaware of the backstory and the characters’ motivations.
The book was basically an entertaining read but without a deep engagement of the reader with the characters.
