The New Patrol by Andy McNab is a thriller set in Afghanistan. The central character is returning for a second tour to Afghanistan, but his previous experiences don’t carry a lot of weight given the rules have changed.
I’m liking
I haven’t read a lot of war stories, and this isn’t going to win any literary prizes, but it was entertaining and made me think about how horrid war is. Particularly when you don’t know who the enemy is.
Things that made me go hmmmm
There isn’t a lot of finesse in the writing and there are a lot of metaphors used, however, it tells the story in a solid entertaining way.
The conclusion
The story explains a lot of the technical details about the weapons and tactics used in the battles. I enjoyed reading something quite different to my usual books.
