The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon is the sequel to The Bone Season. It follows Paige Mahoney after she’s escaped from Sheol I and has returned to London as the city’s most wanted person. She hooks back up with Jaxon Hall and the Seven Seals as they jockey with the other mime lords and mime queens and their respective gangs for power within the city.
I’m liking
As with The Bone Season this book is well written and the world is a lot more familiar this time around. The challenges Paige faces as she tries to stay alive in London while she’s being hunted by Scion makes for a great story, especially as she tries to overthrow the Rephaim.
Things that made me go hmmmm
While the story is interesting and I enjoyed it I felt it didn’t progress sufficiently, it finished with a lot of unanswered questions that I’m keen to see resolved. Which perhaps isn’t a reason to say hmmmmm and more a reflection of my eagerness to see how Paige finds a way out of the situation she and all the other clairvoyants find themselves in.
The conclusion
This is an enjoyable book which further untangles the reasons for the rise in clairvoyance in the world. While the Rephaim barely make an appearance the threat of them is present throughout the book and the mystery keeps you looking for more clues.
