A stage show performance of the Margaret Mahy classic childrens story, at the Pumphouse Theatre, Takapuna.
I took my just-turned-3-year-old for her first ever show for her birthday, and she absolutely LOVED it.
I’m liking
The actors put their all into really bringing the show to life. They go to extra lengths to play to exactly what kids love and get excited about. There’s just the right amount of interaction with the audience without overdoing it, plenty of slapstick (falling over, tripping over things, whacking things with umbrellas) – which is probably the kids favourite parts; and perfectly placed very subtle adult humour too.
The show moved along at a perfect pace to keep my 3yo highness entertained for the whole show – quite an achievement. (We’d gone to a movie earlier in the week which hadn’t achieved this!). The amazing stage effects had her in awe as well – especially the puppet sized dragon suddenly springing to life by itself and the look on her face when the enormous dragon appeared towards the end was priceless.
Things that made me go hmmmm
The show itself was amazing and there was nothing I would change. I would take the price into strong consideration, however, and I probably wouldn’t make it a regular event – but as a birthday/school holiday Daddy/Daughter treat (no siblings) this worked perfectly.
The conclusion
Awesome event for a top quality fun outing with your youngster. (I’d place the show perfectly adapted for 3-8 year olds)
