Little Penguins (that is actually their correct name) or blue penguins as we commonly know them, have to be one of life’s treasures. Unfortunately, something most of us don’t get to have any real contact with. Close Encounters at the National Aquarium (Napier) can certainly remedy this. They are now offering their new programme that lets you get ‘hands on’ with these exceptionally cute birds. You get the opportunity to hand feed them, hold them and have your photo taken with one of the penguins, presented in a folder. One of the main drives for this programme is public education. As is usually the case, humans pose one of the biggest threats to the Little Penguin –be it nets, boats or pet dogs that find them on beaches. It is run daily at 1pm at The National Aquarium, Marine parade, Napier. The minimum age is 6 yrs. and it only takes a maximum of four people, making it a very personal experience

I’m liking

I do have to say this was a delightful and personal experience because you weren’t in a large group. The staff was very passionate about their little wards, explaining how each penguin came to be there, their sad little story and the process of caring for them. All the penguins in their care are there because for one reason or another they will not survive in the wild. Little Lulu that I held is partially blind but that didn’t stop her waddling her way up to me to check me out- heart melting moment.

Things that made me go hmmmm

Perhaps the price. At $60 it isn’t cheap but I have to say I did enjoy it. It could make a unique birthday present and the price also includes entry into the aquarium where you can also watch sharks being fed.

The conclusion

I enjoyed it. It was not only about getting up close and personal with something I have only really encountered on Happy Feet. It was really interesting finding out what goes on behind the closed doors, and the process and regulations of running an aquarium.
