The Mosquito-Band Anti-insect Band is worn on the wrist or ankle. It is available in four colours – red, yellow, green or blue and is sold in packs of two. The silicone base of the band contains 0.75g of citronella oil, the fragrance of which has been refined to help keep mosquitoes and insects away.
I’m liking
I used these bands while holidaying in Niue during the wet season when mosquitoes were plentiful. I found them very light and convenient to wear on either the wrist or ankle. They are waterproof so presumably they can be worn while swimming or showering although it is unclear whether doing so would compromise their performance.
Things that made me go hmmmm
The citronella fragrance is quite strong so if you are sensitive to it then these bands are best worn on the ankle rather than the wrist. Personally, however, I did not find the fragrance upsetting.
According to the instructions, each band is only effective for 48 hours. It is unclear whether the bands (which appear to be made of a type of plastic) are able to be recycled.
I was still bitten by some mosquitoes while wearing these bands. However, I should note that I have yet to find any mosquito repellent that is 100% effective.
The conclusion
These bands would suit consumers who prefer a deet free approach to mosquito control. They are probably best used as one item in your anti-mosquito arsenal rather than the only line of defence.
