From their website: Learn about and be inspired by the sculptures on Wellington’s waterfront. Experiment, learn and have fun with shapes, patterns, prints, colours, new materials and ideas while art teacher Karen Carey from Kids Art Labhelps you create your own original artwork in these weekly fun, theme based, hands-on and interactive art workshops. These workshops are designed for 3-6 year olds.
I’m liking
This was lots of fun! The kids loved looking at the pictures of the sculptures they knew from around Wellington and the windy theme was woven well into three different short art projects.
I was impressed with the way the teacher managed to remember all the kids’ names, and also managed their enthusiasm well. Having 3 different projects to work on during the hour timeframe was great for my 3 year old slightly art phobic child. He has a short attention span for art and the changes kept him interested. The older children still got time to make their creations look really great and didn’t seem to be rushed.
Things that made me go hmmmm
The public space at capital E is great – did you know you can drop in and play on their equipment? I would have preferred if the workshops were in a different room to the climbing and play equipment though, as I had to entice my child back to the art quite a few times. This was handy for those with younger children though, as there was plenty to keep them occupied while their older siblings created their masterpieces.
It was quite a big group the day I went, and lots of people came late. This seemed to be hard for the teacher to manage as kids were at completely different stages throughout the session. I think having two teachers on site would have been better.
The conclusion
We would definitely go again. It was great fun and my 3 year old was very proud of his artwork.
