My utterly Hi-5 obsessed 3 yo daughter thought all her dreams had come true when I took her to the movies to see Hi-5 – Some Kind Of Wonderful. Presented by two existing Hi-5’ers: Lauren and Stevie, the movie follows the journey of Hi-5 hopefuls as they audition to become the next three replacements in Hi-5 group.
I’m liking
Plenty of Hi-5 action – with dancing and singing and kids doing the actions throughout the movie. The two familiar presenters, Lauren and Stevie keep energy and enthusiasm levels high throughout the film with enough familiar songs to keep young ones entertained for most of the film.
Things that made me go hmmmm
Unfortunately I think this movie tried an unsuccessful formula of trying to keep the parents entertained as well. Using a “American Idol” or “X-factor” type sequence of auditioning and narrowing down to the final 3 new recruits, I think this got completely lost on my 3yo target audience, who ended up playing with the flip-out seats and wondering around in the darkened theatre everytime an interview or non-singing/dancing part came on. And to be honest, those parts didn’t really keep me interested either but then, I’m not a big reality TV fan.
The conclusion
A good option for a rainy day for most avid Hi-5 fans – probably in the 6-8 range, and will certainly keep parents who love reality talent shows happy too!
