Each day, Grasshopper asks Tree what day it is and Tree gives him an unexpected answer. Written by Tania Norfolk and illustrated by Chris Norfolk, this brother and sister team has created a delightful story in Grasshopper’s Week.

I’m liking

Framed around the days of the week, this story presents Grasshopper’s week through the different elements of his environment. Monday is ‘Wild-Wind Day’ and Grasshopper spends the day being blown around. And so goes the week. I liked the way that each day starts with the same question and the day’s activities that developed from there. The narrative has a whimsical style that is perfectly matched by the images. There’s a lyrical feel to the story that gives it an almost dream-like quality.

The images are full of movement and motion and Tree has the loveliest, gentlest expression. He’s the kind of tree that I’d want to chat to!

The conclusion

Sometimes, picture books have an obvious strength – either the illustrations or the story stand out. However, this is certainly not the case in this book. The story is enhanced by the illustrations and vice versa. Once again, Craig Potton Publishing has shown that they are top-notch publishers with an eye for magical stories.
