I took my 7yo daughter and 5yo son (plus my son’s best mate) for a school holiday trip to the movies – the choice was “Escape From Planet Earth” in 3D at St. Luke’s. Overall the movie kept their attention for around 85% of the time (some lapses in concentration from the 5yo’s) and they generally had a great time.
I’m liking
The story moved along at a smooth and quick pace and was very simple and easy to understand for the young ones. They also coped with the 3D perfectly fine and loved the parts designed specially for 3D where “things came flying at you”. I found the classic slapstick (aliens falling over mopbuckets) getting the most laughs from the kids – no matter how impressive the 3D and computer animation was.
Things that made me go hmmmm
My son’s friend, who was slightly more sensitive, had a few teary moments at some “scary bits” – so a little bit of re-assurance might be advised if you have similar kids – but overall the movie theatre was full of happy entertained kids.
The conclusion
A very predictable and easy to follow movie that will inspire the imagination of most children, unlikely to be a timeless classic but an easy harmless option to keep the kids entertained for an afternoon
