I took my three kids (3, 5 and 7) for some school holiday fun to see “Dr Brown and His Singing Tiger” at the Herald Theatre in Auckland’s CBD. The reviews were good and the show absolutely lived up to them! This riotous duo presented pure comedy and theatrical genius to the stage to give an entire theatre stuffed full of kids a rollicking good time!

I’m liking

Dr Brown and his tiger managed to skilfully capture both kids’ and parents’ imagination and hold them in the palm of their hands for an entire 45 minutes – and have everyone in stitches throughout the show. With only one crazy costume each, a few basic props and lots of audience interaction, these two somehow managed to transport us into the madness that is a day in the life of Dr Brown. I’ve never before seen kids’ entertainers somehow move an entire theatre full of kids onto the stage to engage with the performers, and then get them back to their seats – not only once but three times! Perfectly controlled chaos. Keep a special eye-out for the wonderfully politically-incorrect baby sitting sequence.

Things that made me go hmmmm

Located at the Herald Theatre in the city, be prepared for city car parking prices. Not a cheap entertainment option for most families but if you can afford it – certainly a must-do these holidays.

The conclusion

Awesome show which my kids and I both loved and were raving about – we had fantastic conversations for the rest of the day about our favourite parts of the show. I hope there’s a sequel!
