Cushie Tushies are a nappy system with pop in inserts, slide in boosters, or the option of a disposable, biodegradable insert meaning you have part disposable/compostable and part reusable/washable if desired. I haven’t trialled the disposable system, only the pop in insert and booster option. For more information, refer to their webite – www.cushietushies.com.au

For more information about Cushie Tushie nappies, see our introduction. We’ve also got some great advice for getting started with cloth nappies.

I’m liking

Someone has really thought about the design of this nappy, with its extra padding around the ‘tushie’ area and a booster that tucks underneath the main insert. It’s a birth to potty nappy with extra features – i.e. if you roll the top down to fit a newborn, there are hard surfaces on the reverse side of the poppers to press on when doing them up – so helpful!

Things that made me go hmmmm

The main insert is well padded in the rear area, which means drying can take a couple of Dunedin days. The tushie area of the insert did not always catch all of a newborn nappy-fill. It is also slightly hard to work out where to put all of the front poppers on a smaller baby.

The conclusion

This is a nappy best-suited to warmer climates due to the drying time required if full time usage is desired. One can pop out the inserts and reuse the covers which could make them more economical than the price ($40.95) initially seems. The covers are really cute.

The Cushie Tushie wipes are fantastic. They would be a great addition to anyone’s cloth nappy kit – even one pack, for the explosion-type nappies where a usual washcloth won’t quite do. One side grips all the necessary bits, the other is soft and makes a nice job of going back over the area to ensure it’s clean. They are big enough to use both sides easily in one change.

I would also recommend watching the video on the Cushie Tushies website which is a clear demonstration of how the nappy works for newborns – this is not immediately obvious when looking at the nappy itself (and I couldn’t follow the written directions on the packet).
