It’s the coolest time to be a kind in Wellington at the moment, with the Capital E National Arts Festival for children in full flight.
In Carnival of Animals, Zebras juggle and flip, kangaroos skip and somersault, elephants with street-cred stride to a rhythm and dinosaur bones shake, clatter and roll to the music…
With tales from the land and sea, creatures tumble, fly, leap and spin their way through the wondrous worlds of the animal kingdom. Inspired by Camille Saint-Saëns’ delightful salute to feathers, fur and fins, this show is a delight for both parents and children.
I’m liking
This was the most fantastic show. The performers were circus arts performers and the whole audience was enthralled at their strength, agility and flexibility. The moves were breath-taking at times but seemed effortless and spontaneous.
It’s impossible to list everything we liked about this show but some highlights for us were:
* The use of the animated background. The performers interacted with it in an amazing range of ways and it added gorgeous layers and texture to the performances.
* The use of balloons that floated out into the audience.
* The whimsical butterfly sequence.
* The hip and happenin’ hip-hop elephants.
The conclusion
This was such a good show. Perfectly pitched for children and nicely paced to keep everyone’s attention. At times, this show was breath-taking in both the skill of the performers and the way that the music, props and animations worked together. A wonderful show!
