I’m liking
The Cake is a lovely, bright, big formatted book that has quirky pictures and a funny little story line. It’s a quick and easy read and will probably have your children guffawing along.
Things that made me go hmmmm
Ooo you know I *love* Gecko Press books and I am always thrilled to see anything they produce. But (and you could sense a ‘but’ coming, eh?) I’m really not into books about being mean and this seems like that to me. I won’t give away the ending, but suffice to say that it doesn’t end well for poor Tiger.
Personally, I loved the feel of the handwritten text but my 5 year old, who is just learning to read, found it a bit tricky to decipher. This would be a good book for emerging readers so it’s a bit of a shame that the font is a barrier to this.
The conclusion
Quirky, silly, easy to read aloud and some families will love it. It’s not my fave of the Gecko collection but I’m sure plenty of other people will love it.
