Well awarded internationally, these prefold nappies are one of the original modern cloth nappies and represent an economical, easy choice. The brand markets all components of the nappy system from cover to inserts; liners and wipes to washing powder.
I’m liking
I was using a size 1 prefold on my son – technically he is a little too big for this size but I found they worked well and gave a really close fit – the nappy was quite compact, almost like a disposable. So long as the nappy is changed often enough, I found this system didn’t leak and was pretty efficient = not a lot of washing for the whole day’s changes.
The whole system works together to create fairly little work for the caregiver. The liners are in a packet where you can pull one out at a time easily (like a tissue from a box); they always contained what they needed to and were flushed away without a problem. There is a nice flow chart diagram that come with the nappy showing how it all works which is handy.
Things that made me go hmmmm
The instructions recommend a change every 2-4 hours (which I found to be necessary) – less than I might get from some other forms of nappy. The nature of the prefold nappy means there is quite a lot of wetness around the baby’s bottom which some babies may mind more than others.
The nappy cover did take a bit of effort to get to fit snuggly around my son’s reasonably narrow thighs while not being too tight around his belly. I’m still not sure I’ve perfected the use of the cover, which fastens with velcro.
The liners, unlike some, cannot be washed for repeat use if they haven’t been soiled/flushed. They just disintegrate in the washing machine.
They are not homegrown, being made in China.
The conclusion
A trial pack is $35, which includes a cover, liner and one prefold insert. 6 further size 2 prefolds are $50. In my opinion once the baby is past the newborn stools stage (which have the potential to blast through a few more covers than after this stage), you could probably get away with 3 covers and 12 prefolds, if you were washing nappies every other day and using something else overnight. This is an economical and easy system. I would recommend getting the trial pack to check the fit of the cover against the baby before purchasing more (of any nappy system really).
