If you don’t know Gecko Press, you should. You must! Gecko Press is an independent publisher of children’s book and they scour the world for gorgeous books that they translate into English. They also publish New Zealand and Australian writers and you can guarantee that whenever you pick up a Gecko Press book, it’s going to be fabulous.
So, A Mammoth in the Fridge then… originally published in French, this is a simple story with a delicious twist.
I’m liking
The book makes use of simple illustrations and a limited palette to tell the story of a family that finds a Mammoth in their fridge. The fire brigade arrives but the mammoth escapes and hides in a tree. Everyone goes home for the night but then readers are in for a surprise… I won’t spoil it for you but your little people will love it (Hint: Keep your eye on Noah’s little sister).
The conclusion
The book is sweet and humorous and although the images seem simple, you’ll want to go back and check the details when you’ve reached the end. My three and a half year old is exactly the right age for this book and we read it twice in a row tonight 😉 It’s going to be one of those books….
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
