Feyre is a hunter and lives on the edge of starvation as she tries to provide for her family. However, while out hunting she kills a fairy who had taken the form of a wolf. As a punishment she has to be imprisoned in an enchanted fairy court. But from childhood she has been taught that fairies are evil and fears both for herself and her family that she’s forced to leave behind.
I’ve read and enjoyed a couple of Sarah J Maas’ books and so was quite excited to have the opportunity to read A Court of Thorns and Roses too.
I’m liking
I liked the idea that fairies are at best oblivious to humans and at worst treat humans as playthings. I also enjoyed the complexity of the overall story with the fairies battling for power while humans suffered in the fallout.
Things that made me go hmmmm
I saw this book in the children’s section at the bookstore but it’s not a children’s book. The sexual content doesn’t make this suitable for younger readers.
The conclusion
While I enjoyed the book it was at times overwritten and a little formulaic. It’s definitely full of teen angst – does he like me, do I like him? But underlying these faults is an interesting story.
