I’ve previously reviewed A Game of Thrones, the first in the Series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. This book, A Clash of Kings, is the second in the series and has recently been re-released as Game of Thrones 2: A Clash of Kings. It follows the turmoil that results from the political vacuum caused by the death of King Robert.
Claimants for the throne abound and the stories of central characters from the first book continue amid a backdrop of viscous civil war.
In the meantime, the Night’s watch, alarmed at the reappearance of wraiths mount an expedition north of the wall to seek the lost Rangers.
I’m liking
Arya Stark. She’s a great character and I’m constantly wondering what she’s going to do and amazed at what she achieves, particularly since she’s a believable 11 year old in the midst of an impossible situation.
Tyrion Lannister. Again, a great character, who’s believable and attracts your sympathy as he labours for his family while receiving nothing in return from them.
Things that made me go hmmmm
As I said previously, the series has taken a long time coming which is a bit of a shame, so much so that some clever people have written a wee tune…
The conclusion
Great second book. Totally loved it. The scope is epic and at times you have to work hard to understand what’s going on but it’s a fantastic book and a fantastic series.
