Melu is a donkey who is not content to follow everyone else. He wants to see what else is around; he wants to have an adventure.

I’m liking

The images in this book are simple but striking. Melu and his friends are clearly the focus of the pictures and my daughter was very much drawn to their progress. Drawn with a limited palette, this book has a really unified feeling and you are drawn into Melu’s adventures.

The book has some nice messages about taking the unknown road, not following others and the importance of working together. It is a good starting place for chatting about virtues but does not moralise.

This book is also available in Maori, which makes it even cooler!

The conclusion

A lovely book and a worthy winner of the Award for Best Children’s Book at this year’s Children’s Book Awards 2013.

Rochelle is mum to three gorgeous daughters. She wishes she had more time to garden and read the newspaper in peace!
