Newly released as a durable board book, Craig Smith’s bestselling kiwi title The Wonky Donkey is back! Complete with Katz Cowley’s illustrations, this cumulative story which has won small hearts around the globe continues to delight new readers.

I’m liking

The CD is found in the back of this board book, so you can learn the catchy country tune and sing along with the words. Your child is likely to catch on pretty quickly to this, and as much of the story repeats page after page, it is very simple for them to pick up from an early age. It is also great for language development for your child to be able to follow the words through on the pages as the song is sung (especially simple words like HEE HAW which repeat over and over!).

There is definitely a little somethin’ about this Winky Wonky Donkey (that is cranky without his coffee) that has made him so popular and well-loved.

Things that made me go hmmmm

This book just isn’t for everyone. The images will be off-putting to some people – pick it up and have a flick through it before you buy it. He is a very cheeky donkey… a bird plucks out his eye, he chews some underwear off the line…. just make sure it’s in your mode of humour before you commit to it ;).

The conclusion

This story is well-loved by many pre-schoolers, and having it in board book fashion will ensure it lasts through many readings. Be sure to take the CD out of the back and put it away safely – there’s some bizarre attraction between pre-schoolers and slightly forbidden shiny objects!

The Wonky Donkey board book with CD, published by Scholastic, retails for under $20.
