The premise of Mum’s the Word is that when people have kids – and particularly, when they leave a career to do so – it can be really tough working out how to make the most of each day. You get up, you have breakfast, you clean – you don’t want to feel like a mouse on a wheel. Mum’s The Word ‘lifts the lid on a box of inspiration for just about every occasion encountered in a normal busy family life’.

I’m liking

There is so much in this book. From ten ways with sticks to recipes for everything from omelettes to playdough, you will certainly find inspiration for a rainy day (and many sunny ones, too). I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling like the days with small people in the house pass you by pretty quickly, and it’s so lovely to be intentional about making memories with your kids. But it’s not always easy when you actually find yourself with the time to do so. This book makes it easy!

Things that made me go hmmmm

If you feel like you were born to be a stay at home parent, and you spend your evenings sorting your Pinterest boards to find activities for the next day – then this probably isn’t the book for you. Sometimes you might find pieces a bit obvious, or irritatingly detailed.

The title might be witty but is slightly unfortunate. This book is as much for dads as for mums.

The conclusion

I can think of friends who have had kids and struggled to adjust to this new lifestyle who would really benefit from being given a copy of this book. If you’re trying to make the most of your days with under fives under your feet, then you’ll have a good time with Mum’s The Word.
