The Outdoor Pursuits Centre — known formally as The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre of New Zealand, and informally as “OPC” — is New Zealand’s leading provider of outdoor education to secondary schools.
Every year around 4,000 students from approximately 130 different NZ secondary schools come to learn with us. OPC strives to develop people’s potential through outdoor education and adventure. These young people suddenly find the world is full of opportunities.
Previously perceived barriers such as gender, race, and physical size are discovered to be no obstacle to participation and achievement; everyone succeeds at their own challenges. This sharing of fun and success is the OPC experience.
OPC offers two exciting venues for outdoor activities — “OPC Tongariro” located adjacent to the Tongariro National Park in the central North Island; and “OPC Great Barrier” located on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf, 90 kilometres north-east of Auckland.
OPC offers two types of programmes for youth — those for school groups and those for individual youths. Each School course is aimed at groups of students from one School, whereas each Youth course is aimed at individual youths. Many of the Youth courses are programmed to run during the school holidays so that individuals from around New Zealand can come to OPC to have awesome adventures.
