The Asus T100 is a tablet computer running Windows 8.1. It comes with a keyboard cover that acts as a docking station turning it into a small computer but also works beautifully as a tablet. The keyboard and tablet are plastic but feel firm and robust, the docking station functions well easily transforming from the laptop configuration to the tablet.
The screen is 10.1inches in size, and the T100 has a headphone out/microphone in, a micro SD card slot, micro HDMI output and micro USB. The keyboard also has a USB 3. It comes with 2 GB of memory and the battery life is said to be more than 10 hours.
I’m liking
I like it a lot. It took a wee while to learn how to use the Windows 8.1 operating system which, given I have a windows phone, surprised me a little. But a week after getting the T100 I’m happy and comfortable using it. I’m finding that I’m using the touchscreen quite naturally and finding it easy to navigate the computer.
The windows app store has some really nice applications, my five year old daughter has totally enjoyed the games that I’ve downloaded. One particular favourite cooking game is the best, for her age, we’ve managed to find and my wife got quite into it as well. The apps I’ve downloaded all work well and are frequently very attractive. It could be that it’s new, but Miss 5 prefers using the T100 to the other tablet in the house.
It comes with the Microsoft office software which means you can easily work on documents and spreadsheets out of the office, and I’m told it fits nicely on the fold-down tray on planes. I haven’t had an opportunity but I like the idea of running a power point presentation from the tablet using the HDMI output.
I have a windows phone and a xbox 360 and I really like the way that the systems are all integrated.
Things that made me go hmmmm
Retrospectively, it wasn’t the problem with the tablet, but I had a lot of trouble getting it to connect to our home wifi. It turned out that the problem was conflicting router channels and by changing the channel all the problems disappeared.
When operating as a tablet what to do with the keyboard becomes a problem, however, the advantage of having the keyboard outweighs the storage issues.
The conclusion
I’d heard a lot of people complain about windows 8.1 but I think it works fantastically in the tablet format. I really like the T100 and find myself using in preference to my laptop.
The apps I’ve downloaded are great and Miss 5 really enjoys the games I’ve got for her.
I’m really happy with the T100, I think it is great.
